Upgrade your 36-inch staircase this weekend- no demo, no contractor, no mess. This prefinished Red Oak retro tread installs directly over your existing step using construction adhesive and a brad nailer. The Natural (Prefinished Clear) finish shows the true warm honey-amber tone of Red Oak with a durable factory-applied polyurethane coat- ready to install straight out of the box.

The Natural Clear finish is the closest match to Red Oak floors finished with a clear or natural coat- the most common finish in US homes built before 2000. If your floors have a light, warm honey tone with visible grain, this is your tread.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Does this tread have a clear coat or not?
A:This tread has our clear coat applied. Any items on our site noted as "Natural" will be prefinished with our Aluminum Oxide top coat.
  2. Q:width of my stairs is only 91/4 inches,so I have to cut or do you make anything o/t 111/2 inch wide
A:Our standard width is 11 1/2". Anything smaller than that will need to be cut to fit on site. If you need to make cuts, the step doctor may be very useful for you! Step Doctor- Measuring Jig: http://woodstairco.com/moulding-and-accessories/tools.html
  3. Q:I measured my stairs and they are 37 1/2 inches. The pre finished treads are 36" closed. Can I get a larger product from you?
A:The next size up is the 42" tread, which you would have to cut to fit. You can find the 42" Red Oak Natural Retro Tread at the link below. http://woodstairco.com/url/yb
  4. Q:what does closed mean?
A:A closed tread means that there is a wall on each side of the tread, so the ends are "closed" in. The link below will describe all the stair tread styles. Stair Tread Styles: http://woodstairco.com/resources/stair-tread-styles.html
  5. Q:Have closed in treads with "cap" on riser the extends 1/4 inch into stairs. Ideally, I need to remove these to install tread but builder glued and nailed. I tried to remove and started to pull top of riser out. Can I cut a kerf on back of these treads to allow a little bending to get these in?
A:You could try and cut a kerf on these treads but it's highly unlikely that they will bend - they're solid 3/4" Oak and very sturdy. Since these particular treads are prefinished, you'd run a good chance of splitting or cracking the finish as well if it did bend. You'd probably have a much better chance of moving the moulding than you would of bending this tread. If you e-mail us a couple of pictures of your installation, we may be able to offer other opinions.
  6. Q:What can you do for me. I have 6 stairs measuring 22 on one side, 10 on the other and 46 inches wide on curved stairs. ??? Mike
A:You can email in photos with dimensions or drawings into us with the species or stain color you are interested in. We will be happy to take a look and see if we can assist you, and get a quote to you if we can!
  7. Q:Hi I'm from Kingdom of saudia arabia I like your product wood stair tread and I want it but the measurement of my stair is 130cm*0.30cm Do you have this size?
A:130 cm x 0.30 cm translates to roughly 51 in x 1/8 in. The thinnest tread we will make is 3/4" but do offer risers in 1/4" thickness and wood veneer is available thinner - but we do not recommend wood veneer as a surface to walk on - it's too thin to withstand foot traffic. For your stairs, you may consider a 54" retro tread: http://woodstairco.com/red-oak-natural-retro-stair-tread-closed-54-in.html For shipping rates outside of the US, please contact us with your information: http://woodstairco.com/contacts/
  8. Q:Do you have retro fit for open stairs?
A:We have Retro Double Return Treads for open staircases. Below is a link to all of the double return retro treads. You can sort on the left side of the screen by species and stain color. https://woodstairco.com/url/Te
  9. Q:Are these treads finished?
A:Yes - these treads have our Aluminum Oxide top coat: See this link for more info: http://woodstairco.com/faq/diamond-coat.html
  10. Q:Are your retro treads and risers exactly the length stated or is there a little extra to account for the variations in a standard size stair?
A:We guarantee the treads (or risers, landing tread, etc) to be at least the length indicated and may or may not be slightly overlength. Any overlength is a result of our manufacturing or distribution processes and not for jobsite variations. If your measurements are close to the length indicated, it's always best to go up one size. Having the extra material to make angled or additional cuts makes installation significantly easier. Most staircases vary in width towards the top or bottom of the staircase and the extra material avoids you running short and saves shipping costs as well as lead-time should a larger one need to be ordered.
  11. Q:What does closed or box end mean on a stair tread?
A:Closed (box) end means both sides of the tread are cut square with no decorative return nosing — it fits wall to wall with both ends hidden. The correct style when neither end of your staircase is open to the room. Most widely available in all species, sizes, and finishes
  12. Q:Why is Red Oak the most popular species for stair treads?
A:Red Oak accounts for over 50% of hardwood floors in US homes built before 2015, making it the natural match for most staircase upgrades. Janka hardness 1290 — handles residential traffic for decades. Open grain accepts stain evenly for consistent color matching to existing floors.
  13. Q:What does Prefinished Natural (Clear) finish look like?
A:Prefinished Natural (Clear) means the tread is factory-coated with a clear protective finish that shows the natural wood color with no stain pigment. For Red Oak: warm honey-amber. For White Oak: pale grey-beige. The aluminum oxide UV-cured polyurethane is applied at the factory for superior durability. Ready to install immediately — no additional finishing required.
  14. Q:What is a retro stair tread and how does it differ from a traditional tread?
A:A retro (retrofit) stair tread is 3/4" thick and installs directly OVER your existing tread — no removal required. The flat bottom sits flush over the current step. Traditional treads are 1" thick and used in new construction or full replacements where existing treads are removed. If your staircase structure is sound, retro treads are faster, less invasive, and DIY-friendly.
  15. Q:What is the step-by-step process for installing a retro stair tread?
A:Step 1: Measure existing tread width and trim retro tread to fit (1/16" gap each end). Step 2: Clean existing tread surface — remove staples, wax, debris. Step 3: Apply Loctite PL Premium adhesive in S-curves across entire back of tread. Step 4: Press firmly onto existing tread and nail with brad nailer at 6" intervals along front nosing and back edge. Step 5: Wipe excess adhesive. Allow 24 hours before walking on. Time per tread: 30–45 minutes.
  16. Q:Is 36 inches a standard stair tread width?
A:36" is the standard minimum width for townhomes, condos, basement staircases, and older homes. Most US residential building codes require a minimum 36" clear stair width. If measuring a tight staircase — townhouse, older colonial, or basement — 36" treads will typically fit. Always measure wall to wall before ordering.
