WoodStairCo's Red Oak Landing Panel System is the purpose-built solution for finishing staircase landings, pie steps, kite steps, and other large, irregular stair surfaces that standard treads cannot cover. Engineered tongue-and-groove Red Oak panels that install like hardwood flooring—no special tools, no contractor required.

Each bundle covers approximately 13 square feet and includes panels 3/4 inch thick x 3 inches wide, in lengths from 72 to 94 inches—designed to accommodate the majority of residential staircase landings and pie-step configurations. The 10-ply engineered base handles seasonal climate variation without the expansion and contraction of solid wood, while a 4mm+ solid Red Oak wear layer delivers the look, texture, and refinishability of real hardwood.

Available unfinished for a custom on-site stain match, or choose from 16 prefinished stain colors—the same options available on WoodStairCo's retro and traditional stair treads—for a consistent staircase renovation from the first step to the landing.

Important: The Landing Panel System covers the field of the landing or pie step. The leading edge (nosing side) requires a Landing Tread, sold separately. See our Landing Tread range to complete your project.

INSTALLATION NOTE

Prepare the landing surface—remove all carpet, tack strips, staples, and adhesive. Surface must be clean, flat, and dry. Install the Landing Tread (sold separately) on the leading edge first. Lay panels parallel to the nosing edge using tongue-and-groove construction—apply Loctite PL Premium adhesive to the back face of each panel, snap into the previous panel, and secure with a brad nailer through the tongue at 6-inch intervals. Trim the final row to fit with a miter saw. If unfinished, sand to 120-grit, stain, and apply 2 coats of polyurethane after installation. Allow 48 hours before foot traffic.

STAIN / FINISH TIP

For the best color match across your full staircase, order the Landing Panel System in the same prefinished stain color as your retro or traditional treads. Prefinished colors are produced in batches, so ordering together helps ensure a consistent match. If ordering unfinished, use the same stain product and finish coat as your treads for a consistent look. Order our Red Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack ($19.95) to test all colors on real Red Oak before buying.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:We are interested in the white oak prefinished "clear" treads, but see that your landing panels are only available in red-oak. Would the red oak prefinished "clear" be a close enough match?
A:Our landing panel system is currently only available in Red Oak. If you are wanting White Oak or any other Species for your treads we will be more than happy to assist you by sourcing matching flooring that you can use to cover the landings. 2. Q:If the panels and landing tread are tongue and groove and I have to rip one of the panels to fit, how do I join the ripped panel to the tongue/groove panel?
A:It's generally best to install the ripped panel closest to the wall so the ripped edge is against the wall and a full width board is next to the landing tread. If that's not an option, the boards can actually be installed without the tongue or groove since the adhesive will do most of the holding. Shoot a couple finish nails in the far edges to hold the ripped board in place while the glue sets. Nailing at the far edge allows the nail hole to be hidden by quarter round along the perimeter after the landing is installed.
  3. Q:How are the tongue and groove engineered landing panels ( 3/4" x 3") installed is it glued down or nailed down?
A:We recommend using PL Premium adhesive under the individual boards and nailing the tongues of the boards to hold them in place while the glue sets. If space is tight, the boards can be face nailed and puttied with a touch up crayon afterwards. 4. Q:i have a landing 45.5 deep and 54in wide..I am getting the bullnose in the 54in ..how many panels of the tougue and groove panel I would need...2,457ins
A:Your landing is roughly 18 square feet by the dimensions you give. The panel system is designed to cover 14 square feet per carton (up to approximately 42"x42" square landing) so you would need 2 cartons and one landing tread to cover your landing.
  5. Q:can the unfinished red oak be sanded and stained?/
A:Absolutely, the unfinished option is intended to be sanded/stained/finished to a color of your choosing
  6. Q:Do I use this over a plywood stair landing or do I take out the plywood stair landing out ?
A:The panels will need to be installed over the plywood subfloor. They are not a standalone product.
  7. Q:if I am purchasing traditional treads rather than retro ones (completely ripping out old treads) can I still use this panel system for the landing. I understand I will still need a subfloor, just wondering it this would look sort of odd?thank you!
A:Yes - this system can be used with either traditional or retro treads since it is installed over the plywood in a landing. Once installed, there should not be a noticeable difference whether traditional or retro treads were used on the steps since both profiles have a 1" bullnose like the 5-1/4" landing treads.
  8. Q:At 14 sq/ft two panels are is not quite enough to finish my 30 sq/ft landing (93” x 46”). Can I purchase additional individual boards, or is this only sold as a full bundle?
A:Our T&G panel system is typically sold in full bundles only but in some cases, we may be able to offer half-bundle increments. For custom material quotes, please call us at (866) 283-4224 to get in touch with a sales rep for your particular requirements on this project
  9. Q:Can I stain this tread any color I want?
A:Yes. Unfinished hardwood treads accept any oil-based or water-based stain. Sand lightly with 120-grit, apply chosen stain, allow to dry, then apply 2–3 coats of polyurethane. For floor matching: bring a floor sample to a paint store to identify the correct stain. We also offer a Red Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack for testing before committing to full treads.
  10. Q:Why is Red Oak the most popular species for stair treads?
A:Red Oak accounts for over 50% of hardwood floors in US homes built before 2015, making it the natural match for most staircase upgrades. Janka hardness 1290 — handles residential traffic for decades. Open grain accepts stain evenly for consistent color matching to existing floors.
  11. Q:What is the Red Oak Tongue and Groove Landing Panel System?
A:The landing panel system provides complete hardwood flooring coverage for staircase landings — the flat platform at the top or between flights. Rather than individual edge landing treads, this system covers the entire landing surface with tongue-and-groove Red Oak panels, creating a full hardwood floor appearance. The correct product when your landing needs full hardwood coverage, not just an edge trim board.
  12. Q:What is the Landing Panel System, and what is it used for?
A:The Landing Panel System is a set of 3/4-inch thick engineered tongue-and-groove Red Oak panels designed to finish staircase landings, pie steps, kite steps, and other large, irregular stair surfaces. Standard stair treads are rectangular and cannot span a landing or wedge-shaped step—the Landing Panel System is the purpose-built solution for these areas.
  13. Q:How much area does one bundle cover?
A:Each bundle covers approximately 13 square feet. This is enough for most standard residential staircase landings. For larger landings or complex pie step configurations, measure your area before ordering to determine how many bundles you need. Contact WoodStairCo if you need help estimating coverage.
  14. Q:Do I need to order a Landing Tread with the Landing Panel System?
A:Yes—the Landing Panel System covers the field of the landing but does not include a nosing piece for the leading edge. A Landing Tread (sold separately) is required for the step nosing edge that overhangs the riser below. See WoodStairCo's Landing Tread range for the correct species and stain color to match your panels.
  15. Q:What is the difference between Unfinished and Prefinished options?
A:Unfinished ($236.04) arrives as raw Red Oak—you sand, stain, and apply a finish coat on-site for a completely custom color match. Prefinished (+$90.87, total $326.91) arrives factory-stained and polyurethane-coated in your chosen color—ready to install with no on-site finishing. Prefinished is faster; Unfinished gives more color control.
  16. Q:Can I match the Landing Panel System to my existing retro or traditional treads?
A:Yes—the Landing Panel System is available in all the same prefinished stain colors as WoodStairCo's retro and traditional treads (Natural, Gunstock, Smoke, Dusk, Butterscotch, Saddle, and more). Order the same color as your treads for a consistent staircase renovation. Order together where possible to ensure color batch consistency.
  17. Q:Why is the Landing Panel System engineered rather than solid wood?
A:Staircase landings experience more climate variation than individual treads—they are larger surfaces exposed to temperature and humidity changes. The 10-ply engineered base resists the expansion and contraction that causes solid wood platforms to warp or gap over time. The 4mm+ solid Red Oak wear layer means you still get real wood on the surface—with the stability benefits of engineered construction underneath.
  18. Q:Can the Landing Panel System be sanded and refinished in the future?
A:Yes—the 4mm+ solid Red Oak wear layer is thick enough for one to two full sanding and refinishing cycles, depending on how much material is removed each time. This is one of the key advantages of engineered panels over laminate or LVP alternatives.
  19. Q:What is the current special price, and how long does it last?
A:The Landing Panel System (Unfinished) is currently available at a special price of $183.64, reduced from the regular price of $236.04. This special pricing is valid until June 30, 2026. Prefinished versions are priced at the regular $326.91 during this period.
