White risers are a beautiful and economical addition to any staircase. They are especially popular in homes with other white trim and molding. White risers are also a great way to lighten a dark staircase or provide definition between steps.
When ordering risers, you'll typically order the same length as the tread. These retro risers are designed to reface an existing riser while being thin enough not to offset your new retro treads past any existing skirtboard.
Our white retro risers are shipped with an anti-scuff laminate on the surface and are ready to install. Standard riser dimensions are 1/4" nominal (3/16" actual) thick by 7-3/4" tall by 48" long.

Product Note: There may be some minor chipping of the white coating which occurs during transit. This is normal and is intended to be trimmed during installation since the risers are oversized for most applications.
Installation Note: Latex paint will not adhere to the coating on the retro risers - if painting the retro risers, additional prep work will be required.

These risers are designed to be used with our Retro stair treads as part of the complete staircase remodeling system

The White Retro Riser 48 in completes retro stair renovations in wider single-family homes. Same pre-primed white finish and no-demo install method — adhesive and brad nailer over your existing riser, no removal required.

At $19.66, this is the 48-inch version of WoodStairCo's most popular riser style. Order with 48-inch retro treads for a complete renovation kit. One coat of white semi-gloss paint, and the staircase is done.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:When using a white riser with a Maple tread do you use a white or maple cove moulding. Stair case is 15 steps high so a lot will be visible
A:The Cove Moulding should be the same species as the tread, and not the riser. If you have Maple Treads, you will want to order the Maple Cove Moulding.
  2. Q:Is the riser flexable enough to go around the rounded ends of the starting step?
A:These risers are not flexible enough to wrap around the starter step. Below is a link to the Starter Step Risers, which sounds like what you will need. Starter Step Risers: http://woodstairco.com/url/wc
  3. Q:Are these "retroriser" manfactured by Young?
A:No, we make all of our own products and are the original manufacturer of retro treads and risers. Young entered the retro-fit market several years after us but marketed their products with similar names. Our products can only be purchased directly from us or one of several wholesale distribution channels for larger commercial accounts. We find that we can make a much higher quality product, at a better value, and with much better service than through large scale general distribution channels like Young. While Young uses our product names, there are several differences on the treads, with the biggest difference being the pre-attached cove. On the jobsite, pre-attached cove creates significant issues with installation. Pre-attached cove will leave gaps (or "smileys") under each tread unless the sub-tread is cut perfectly square. Separating the moulding from the tread allows gaps and cutting errors to be hidden on the final remodeled staircase.
  4. Q:I had purchased Economy Grade - White Retro Riser, order100033533, SKU#ERIZP14. I would like to know if these risers are still available at the same price.

  5. Q:Can I stain this tread any color I want?
A:Yes. Unfinished hardwood treads accept any oil-based or water-based stain. Sand lightly with 120-grit, apply chosen stain, allow to dry, then apply 2–3 coats of polyurethane. For floor matching: bring a floor sample to a paint store to identify the correct stain. We also offer a Red Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack for testing before committing to full treads.
  6. Q:Is 36 inches a standard stair tread width?
A:36" is the standard minimum width for townhomes, condos, basement staircases, and older homes. Most US residential building codes require a minimum 36" clear stair width. If measuring a tight staircase — townhouse, older colonial, or basement — 36" treads will typically fit. Always measure wall to wall before ordering.
  7. Q:What is the difference between retro risers and traditional risers?
A:Retro risers are designed to install over existing risers — same concept as retro treads. Traditional risers (3/4" thick) are used in new construction or when replacing the full stair assembly. Retro risers are the correct pairing for retro tread installations; traditional risers pair with traditional tread replacements.
  8. Q:What material are the iron balusters made from?
A:WoodStairCo iron balusters are made from wrought iron — a solid, heavy-gauge metal that provides long-lasting structural strength and a traditional crafted appearance. Available in a range of profiles from plain square to ornamental designs. Standard finish options include satin black and oil-rubbed bronze. Wrought iron balusters are suitable for both contemporary and traditional staircases and carry a lifetime finish warranty under normal residential use.
  9. Q:Do I need to install risers when I install new stair treads?
A:Not always. Open-riser staircases have no risers by design. Closed staircases already have risers that may not need replacing unless damaged. For a full retro tread installation, replacing risers at the same time gives the cleanest result — especially if existing risers are chipped, stained, or mismatched. Retro risers use the same adhesive + brad nailer method as treads.
  10. Q:Who typically needs a 48-inch retro riser?
A:48-inch risers pair with 48-inch retro treads — typically found in larger single-family homes with wider staircases. Always measure your existing tread width before ordering your riser length.
  11. Q:Is the installation method the same for the 48-inch as for shorter risers?
A:Yes — same method: Loctite PL Premium adhesive in S-curves across the back, press over existing riser, secure with brad nailer at 6-inch intervals. The wider run means a few more brad nail points for even contact across the 48-inch surface.
  12. Q:What is the difference between the 48-inch and 42-inch white retro riser?
A:Only the length differs — both are 7-3/4 inches high, pre-primed white, and use the same install method. Choose the length that matches your retro tread and stair opening width.
  13. Q:Can I install the retro riser without removing the old carpet on the riser face?
A:Remove all carpet, tack strips, and staples from the existing riser face first. The retro riser needs a clean, flat surface to bond to. Any residual adhesive or uneven spots should be sanded or scraped flat before installation.
