Read other answers Q:I am considering replacing my carpeted stairs with your Brazillian Cheery stair treads. It occurs to me that the first step will be ¾” higher than the rest of the steps. The difference in height between the first and all other steps may be a safety issue or may just feel unnatural. Do you have a thinner tread for the first step or do you recommend replacing the first step with a new, thinner step before applying the tread?
A:The 3/4" Stair Tread on the first step will not be an issue, since all the treads are being increased by the same amount. (3/4" increase because retro treads are being installed on each step) You will not be able to feel or see a difference. The very top step will be a little lower, unless you install the Landing Tread. The landing tread is 3/4" thick also, and has a groove in the back for carpet or hardwood to be set in the groove. This is a transitioning piece from the staircase to the floor it leads to. Read other answers Q:I had purchased retro fit stair treads from a different company and 2 days after installing them every tread and riser started to split and crack. Have you seen this problem at all with your treads and risers and if so, any idea why this would happen. We are in search of new treads and risers to replace the damaged ones. The risers were installed with Liquid Nails adhesive, no nails at all other than a couple of pin nails in the bullnose.
A:We recommend using Loctite PL Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive when installing our treads. If you use a water based glue it will warp the treads. Of you have any other questions please contact me direct at 1-866-283-4224.

Read other answers Q:My existing carpeted steps appear to be 36" with a little variation. Can I order the 36" retro steps or do I need to go up to the 42" to make sure I account for these small changes.
A:You'll definitely want to go with the 42's. Our treads are guaranteed to be at least the size mentioned (36" in this case) but not necessarily longer. If your staircase is out of square (which most are) you'll need the extra couple of inches to account for the variations and to give you room to trim each tread to fit.
