Unfinished products are considered commodities and will require some degree of additional minor prep-work before they can be considered complete, or "finished". Some degree of sanding / puttying is to be expected before finishing. Alternatively, consider ordering prefinished products.

This 54-inch White Oak Unfinished Traditional Riser pairs with your 54-inch traditional stair treads for a complete, matched stair unit. Risers are the vertical face boards between each tread- getting them right completes the staircase and gives a polished, professional result.

White Oak is the premium choice for contemporary and transitional homes. Its tight grain and natural grey-green undertones make it the exact match for White Oak treads and floors. Unfinished means you sand, stain, and finish on-site- apply the same product as your treads for a seamless, consistent colour across the full staircase.

Not sure which stain? Order our White Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack ($19.95) and test all colours on real White Oak wood before buying your full riser set.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Do you have any white oak radius treads / risers?
A:Generally, This page will help with standard tread dimensions: http://woodstairco.com/faq/standard-stair-tread-dimensions.html Radius treads typically refer to the first step in a staircase or a starter step. We offer the following standard sized treads: Single Turnout Starter Step: http://woodstairco.com/white-oak-single-turnout-starter-step.html Single Turnout Starter Riser: http://woodstairco.com/stain-grade-single-turnout-starting-step-riser.html Or you may need a double radius profile: Double Turnout Starter Step: http://woodstairco.com/white-oak-double-turnout-starting-step.html Double Turnout Starter Riser: http://woodstairco.com/stain-grade-double-turnout-starting-step-riser.html We can also make custom radius treads, landing treads, and other profiles. You can reply to this email with your dimensions and we can write a custom quote for you, or you can use our contact form for more info: http://woodstairco.com/contacts/
  2. Q:Why is White Oak the premium choice for modern staircase designs?
A:White Oak has become the dominant hardwood flooring choice in new construction since 2018, driven by the popularity of wire-brushed and greige finishes. WoodStairCo unfinished White Oak treads are milled from the same species as premium flooring, making stain matching precise and predictable.
  3. Q:Can I stain this tread any color I want?
A:Yes. Unfinished hardwood treads accept any oil-based or water-based stain. Sand lightly with 120-grit, apply chosen stain, allow to dry, then apply 2–3 coats of polyurethane. For floor matching: bring a floor sample to a paint store to identify the correct stain. We also offer a Red Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack for testing before committing to full treads.
  4. Q:When is a 54-inch stair tread needed?
A:54" treads are used in architecturally significant staircases in larger homes — typically 2,500+ sq ft custom homes with a two-story entry foyer, or staircases designed as a room focal point. 54" wide stairs feel genuinely grand. Common in formal foyer renovations and high-end new construction.
  5. Q:What is the difference between retro risers and traditional risers?
A:Retro risers are designed to install over existing risers — same concept as retro treads. Traditional risers (3/4" thick) are used in new construction or when replacing the full stair assembly. Retro risers are the correct pairing for retro tread installations; traditional risers pair with traditional tread replacements.
  6. Q:Do I need to install risers when I install new stair treads?
A:Not always. Open-riser staircases have no risers by design. Closed staircases already have risers that may not need replacing unless damaged. For a full retro tread installation, replacing risers at the same time gives the cleanest result — especially if existing risers are chipped, stained, or mismatched. Retro risers use the same adhesive + brad nailer method as treads.
  7. Q:What size riser do I need for a 54-inch stair tread?
A:A 54-inch riser pairs with a 54-inch tread. The riser length should match the tread length so both ends align cleanly at the stringer or wall. Always measure your stair opening before ordering.
  8. Q:Do risers need to be finished before installation?
A:For the best result, yes- finish risers before installation. Apply stain and finish flat on a workbench, allow full cure (48 hours), then install. Finishing in-place is possible but harder to control, especially where the riser meets the tread.
  9. Q:Do I need to match my riser species to my tread species?
A:For a cohesive look, yes. If you have White Oak unfinished treads, use White Oak unfinished risers and apply the same stain and finish to both. Mixing species is possible if you use the same stain colour, but grain and tone differences may show.
  10. Q:Can I use a pre-primed white riser instead of a wood riser?
A:Yes- Pre-Primed White Traditional Risers ($28.14–$40.20) are a popular choice for the two-tone look. You get dark or natural stained treads with bright white painted risers. This is the most requested contemporary staircase design and saves finishing time on the risers
