Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Why is White Oak the premium choice for modern staircase designs?
A:White Oak has become the dominant hardwood flooring choice in new construction since 2018, driven by the popularity of wire-brushed and greige finishes. WoodStairCo unfinished White Oak treads are milled from the same species as premium flooring, making stain matching precise and predictable.
  2. Q:Can I stain this tread any color I want?
A:Yes. Unfinished hardwood treads accept any oil-based or water-based stain. Sand lightly with 120-grit, apply chosen stain, allow to dry, then apply 2–3 coats of polyurethane. For floor matching: bring a floor sample to a paint store to identify the correct stain. We also offer a Red Oak Stain Colors Sample Pack for testing before committing to full treads.
  3. Q:When do I need a 48-inch stair tread?
A:48" treads are used in wider residential staircases — common in larger custom homes, colonial-style homes, and formal entry staircases. A 48" staircase feels noticeably more generous than a 42". Also found in converted commercial spaces, wide hallways, and some split-level designs. Always measure before ordering — a 48" tread in a 42" opening needs cutting; under-ordering creates gaps.
  4. Q:What is the difference between retro risers and traditional risers?
A:Retro risers are designed to install over existing risers — same concept as retro treads. Traditional risers (3/4" thick) are used in new construction or when replacing the full stair assembly. Retro risers are the correct pairing for retro tread installations; traditional risers pair with traditional tread replacements.
  5. Q:Do I need to install risers when I install new stair treads?
A:Not always. Open-riser staircases have no risers by design. Closed staircases already have risers that may not need replacing unless damaged. For a full retro tread installation, replacing risers at the same time gives the cleanest result — especially if existing risers are chipped, stained, or mismatched. Retro risers use the same adhesive + brad nailer method as treads.
  6. Q:Why choose White Oak over pre-primed white risers?
A:White Oak risers give a matched-wood look where both the tread and riser are the same species and stain- a more refined, furniture-grade result. Pre-primed white risers give the popular two-tone dark-tread / white-riser look. Both are valid choices depending on the aesthetic you want.
  7. Q:How do I ensure my White Oak risers match my White Oak treads?
A:Use the same stain product, same application method, and same finish coat on both risers and treads- applied in the same session from the same batch of stain. This gives the most consistent result. Natural (no stain) + polyurethane will show slight variation due to different surface areas, which is normal.
  8. Q:Can I order White Oak risers in other lengths?
A:Yes- White Oak Unfinished Traditional Risers are available in 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 inch lengths. Choose the length that matches your tread width.
  9. Q:What is the difference between a traditional riser and a retro riser?
A:Traditional risers are installed on the stair carriage frame as part of a full stair build or rebuild. Retro (retrofit) risers install over existing risers using adhesive- no removal needed. If you are doing a retro tread renovation, use retro risers. If rebuilding from scratch, use traditional risers
