  1. Q:How would you attach a 1 inch thick tread to an existing stairway? Would you need to take the existing cladding off and then attach the tread to the framing and if so how would you do that? Is it even OK to attach a 1 inch thick tread to an existing stairway (i.e. over the existing cladding which is plywood) Thanks for your help!
    A:If you are wanting to avoid taking up the entire existing step (plywood) you would want to use the Retro Tread. The retro treads are made to overlay an existing step. The 1" thick treads are used to replace the entire step. You would have to take the existing plywood step off, and install the 1" thick tread down onto the stringers.
