White Oak Stair Treads

White oak stair treads combine a Janka hardness rating of 1,360 lbf with tyloses that seal the wood’s pores against moisture. Both properties make white oak the preferred species for high-traffic residential and commercial staircases.

WoodStairCo manufactures every tread from 100% solid FAS/Select Grade White Oak with a UV-cured aluminum oxide factory finish harder than any site-applied polyurethane.

Shop retro overlay treads (3/4") to install over your existing staircase without demolition, or traditional 1" treads for new construction.

What are White Oak Stair Treads?

White oak stair treads are solid hardwood, milled from White Oak, a North American hardwood with a Janka hardness of 1,360 lbf and tyloses that block moisture absorption. Available in retro (3/4" overlay) and traditional (1" full-thickness) profiles, prefinished with UV-cured aluminum oxide or unfinished for on-site finishing. Made in the USA.

White oak is the stronger choice for most staircases.

White oak scores 1,360 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, approximately 5% harder than red oak at 1,290 lbf. It also contains tyloses, cellular structures that seal the wood’s pores against moisture absorption, making it more dimensionally stable and less prone to cupping.

  • Hardness: White Oak 1,360 lbf vs Red Oak 1,290 lbf
  • Moisture resistance: White oak has tyloses; red oak does not
  • Stain absorption: White oak accepts gray and cool-tone stains more cleanly
  • Price: Red oak runs lower in cost, making it the right call for warm-stain and budget projects

Prefinished White Oak Stair Treads: The UV-Cured Finish Difference

Prefinished white oak stair treads are the right choice for most projects.

WoodStairCo applies a 100% solids UV-cured aluminum oxide finish at the factory, the same technology used in premium hardwood flooring. This coating is harder and more scratch-resistant than any polyurethane applied on site, and it cures with no VOC emissions.

  • Ships ready to install, no on-site sanding, staining, or finishing
  • Harder and more durable than site-applied polyurethane
  • Zero VOC emissions during cure
  • Six standard stain colors plus natural (clear UV coat), plus custom stain matching
