The Red Oak Smoke Retro Riser 36 in is the matched-wood companion to Red Oak Smoke retro treads — prefinished in the same grey-brown Smoke stain for a fully consistent, monochromatic staircase. Installs over your existing riser using adhesive and a brad nailer, no removal required.

Smoke is WoodStairCo's most popular grey stain — a warm grey-brown that works in transitional and contemporary interiors and pairs naturally with grey LVP floors, white walls, and modern trim. If you have Smoke treads, this is the riser that completes the look.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Why is Red Oak the most popular species for stair treads?
A:Red Oak accounts for over 50% of hardwood floors in US homes built before 2015, making it the natural match for most staircase upgrades. Janka hardness 1290 — handles residential traffic for decades. Open grain accepts stain evenly for consistent color matching to existing floors.
  2. Q:What does the Smoke stain finish look like?
A:Smoke is a grey-brown stain — cool and muted but not fully grey. It bridges warm traditional and modern grey-palette homes. Works well with grey-painted walls, white trim, and contemporary furniture. On risers, Smoke pairs naturally with white painted risers for a two-tone modern staircase look.
  3. Q:Is 36 inches a standard stair tread width?
A:36" is the standard minimum width for townhomes, condos, basement staircases, and older homes. Most US residential building codes require a minimum 36" clear stair width. If measuring a tight staircase — townhouse, older colonial, or basement — 36" treads will typically fit. Always measure wall to wall before ordering.
  4. Q:What is the difference between retro risers and traditional risers?
A:Retro risers are designed to install over existing risers — same concept as retro treads. Traditional risers (3/4" thick) are used in new construction or when replacing the full stair assembly. Retro risers are the correct pairing for retro tread installations; traditional risers pair with traditional tread replacements.
  5. Q:Do I need to install risers when I install new stair treads?
A:Not always. Open-riser staircases have no risers by design. Closed staircases already have risers that may not need replacing unless damaged. For a full retro tread installation, replacing risers at the same time gives the cleanest result — especially if existing risers are chipped, stained, or mismatched. Retro risers use the same adhesive + brad nailer method as treads.
  6. Q:Do the Red Oak Smoke retro risers exactly match the Red Oak Smoke retro treads?
A:Yes — both are produced from the same Smoke stain color run at WoodStairCo. Order treads and risers together from the same batch for the most consistent color match across your full staircase.
  7. Q:When should I use Smoke wood risers instead of white pre-primed risers?
A:Choose Smoke wood risers when you want a monochromatic matched-wood look — treads and risers the same color and species. Choose white pre-primed risers when you want the contrasting two-tone dark tread / white riser look. Both are popular; it comes down to the aesthetic you prefer.
  8. Q:Is there a matching cove moulding in Smoke for a complete finish?
A:Yes — Red Oak Smoke Cove Moulding 48 in ($10.30) is available at WoodStairCo. Cove moulding is installed in the angle between the tread and riser for a clean, professional finish. It is optional but recommended for the most polished result.
  9. Q:Can I use 36-inch Smoke risers with 42-inch Smoke treads on the same staircase?
A:No — the riser length must match the tread length so both ends align at the stringer or wall. If your treads are 42 inches, use the Red Oak Smoke Retro Riser 42 in ($42.62).
