Red Oak Saddle Traditional Riser 48 in

This 48-inch prefinished Red Oak Traditional Riser in Saddle finishes your staircase with a matched, ready-to-install vertical face board. Saddle is a medium leather-brown stain- warmer than Smoke, lighter than Dusk- that works beautifully in transitional and traditional interiors.

Prefinished and ready to install straight from the box. The factory aluminum oxide polyurethane coat is durable and consistent- the same colour run as Saddle treads, so you get a matched result without any on-site staining.

Pair with Red Oak Saddle Traditional Closed treads or Red Oak Saddle Left Return / Right Return treads for a fully matched, professional staircase.

Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:What is a traditional 1-inch stair tread and when should I use it?
A:A traditional stair tread is 1" thick — the standard for new staircase construction or full replacements where existing treads are removed. Required by most US building codes for new builds. Use when existing treads are too damaged to install over, or when building a staircase from scratch.
  2. Q:Why is White Oak the premium choice for modern staircase designs?
A:White Oak has become the dominant hardwood flooring choice in new construction since 2018, driven by the popularity of wire-brushed and greige finishes. WoodStairCo unfinished White Oak treads are milled from the same species as premium flooring, making stain matching precise and predictable.
  3. Q:When do I need a 48-inch stair tread?
A:48" treads are used in wider residential staircases — common in larger custom homes, colonial-style homes, and formal entry staircases. A 48" staircase feels noticeably more generous than a 42". Also found in converted commercial spaces, wide hallways, and some split-level designs. Always measure before ordering — a 48" tread in a 42" opening needs cutting; under-ordering creates gaps.
  4. Q:What does Saddle stain look like on Red Oak?
A:Saddle is a medium-to-dark warm brown — deeper than Gunstock, with a rich leather-brown quality. On Red Oak it produces a classic hardwood brown that works well in traditional, transitional, and colonial interiors. Saddle closely matches many medium-brown Red Oak floors, aged Brazilian Cherry, and caramel-brown engineered hardwoods.
  5. Q:Do I need to install risers when I install new stair treads?
A:Not always. Open-riser staircases have no risers by design. Closed staircases already have risers that may not need replacing unless damaged. For a full retro tread installation, replacing risers at the same time gives the cleanest result — especially if existing risers are chipped, stained, or mismatched. Retro risers use the same adhesive + brad nailer method as treads.
  6. Q:What stain colour does Saddle pair well with?
A:Saddle is a medium leather-brown- it pairs naturally with beige, cream, greige, and warm grey wall colours. It is a transitional colour that works in both traditional and contemporary interiors. For a two-tone look, pair Saddle treads with white pre-primed risers.
  7. Q:Is this riser ready to install or does it need finishing?
A:This is a prefinished riser- it is factory-stained and polyurethane-coated. No on-site staining is needed. Simply apply adhesive, install, and nail in place. For cut-end touch-ups, use the Prefinished Touch Up and Repair Kit ($21.07)
  8. Q:What is the standard height of a traditional riser?
A:WoodStairCo traditional risers are 7-3/4 inches high- the standard residential riser height. If your existing risers are a different height, measure before ordering. Risers can be trimmed in height with a table saw if needed.
  9. Q:Can I install risers without removing existing risers first?
A:For traditional riser replacement, existing risers are typically removed as part of a full stair rebuild. Unlike retro treads (which install over existing treads), traditional risers are installed on the stair carriage frame. If you are doing an overlay renovation, consider our retro riser range instead.
