Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:Why is White Oak the premium choice for modern staircase designs?
A:White Oak has become the dominant hardwood flooring choice in new construction since 2018, driven by the popularity of wire-brushed and greige finishes. WoodStairCo unfinished White Oak treads are milled from the same species as premium flooring, making stain matching precise and predictable.
  2. Q:What does closed or box end mean on a stair tread?
A:Closed (box) end means both sides of the tread are cut square with no decorative return nosing — it fits wall to wall with both ends hidden. The correct style when neither end of your staircase is open to the room. Most widely available in all species, sizes, and finishes
  3. Q:When is a 54-inch stair tread needed?
A:54" treads are used in architecturally significant staircases in larger homes — typically 2,500+ sq ft custom homes with a two-story entry foyer, or staircases designed as a room focal point. 54" wide stairs feel genuinely grand. Common in formal foyer renovations and high-end new construction.
  4. Q:What does Prefinished Natural (Clear) finish look like?
A:Prefinished Natural (Clear) means the tread is factory-coated with a clear protective finish that shows the natural wood color with no stain pigment. For Red Oak: warm honey-amber. For White Oak: pale grey-beige. The aluminum oxide UV-cured polyurethane is applied at the factory for superior durability. Ready to install immediately — no additional finishing required.
  5. Q:What is a retro stair tread and how does it differ from a traditional tread?
A:A retro (retrofit) stair tread is 3/4" thick and installs directly OVER your existing tread — no removal required. The flat bottom sits flush over the current step. Traditional treads are 1" thick and used in new construction or full replacements where existing treads are removed. If your staircase structure is sound, retro treads are faster, less invasive, and DIY-friendly.
  6. Q:What is the step-by-step process for installing a retro stair tread?
A:Step 1: Measure existing tread width and trim retro tread to fit (1/16" gap each end). Step 2: Clean existing tread surface — remove staples, wax, debris. Step 3: Apply Loctite PL Premium adhesive in S-curves across entire back of tread. Step 4: Press firmly onto existing tread and nail with brad nailer at 6" intervals along front nosing and back edge. Step 5: Wipe excess adhesive. Allow 24 hours before walking on. Time per tread: 30–45 minutes.
  7. Q:Who needs a 54-inch stair tread?
A:54-inch treads fit staircases in larger single-family homes and custom builds. The widths most common in US residential construction are 36 in (townhomes/condos), 42 in (standard homes), 48 in (larger homes), and 54–60 in (wide or custom staircases). Always measure your stair opening before ordering.
  8. Q:Is Natural (Prefinished Clear) the same as unfinished?
A:No- Natural (Prefinished Clear) is a factory-applied polyurethane finish with no stain pigment added. It protects the wood and locks in the natural honey-amber colour of Red Oak. Unfinished treads have no finish at all and require on-site sanding and finishing.
  9. Q:What is the matching riser for a 54-inch retro tread?
A:White Pre-Primed Retro Riser 54 in ($22.13) is available at WoodStairCo. The riser width (36, 42, 48, 54, 60 in) should match the tread width for a clean installation.
  10. Q:Can I get 54-inch treads in other stain colours?
A:Yes- the 54-inch retro tread is available in Natural, Gunstock, Golden Oak, Butterscotch D34, Saddle, Smoke, Greystone, Dusk, Lowcountry Cordial, and Lowcountry Toffee. Search woodstairco.com for '54 in retro tread' to browse all available colours.
