Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:The price that is shown is for how many stair treads?
A:All of our products are sold by the piece. Prefinished cove moulding is sold in 78 in pieces but treads and risers are sold by the piece.
  2. Q:Is the Minwax Golden Oak finish on these Retro Stair Treads high gloss? semigloss? satin? What doe "close" mean?
A:Our standard UV finish gloss level is a semi-gloss which falls in the range of 65-70. We use the term "closed" when the tread has no returns. Sometimes this type of tread is more commonly called a "box" tread. In short, a closed tread will have a wall or kneewall on both sides of the step, opposed to a left or right return. There is a much better page showing the different styles here: http://woodstairco.com/resources/stair-tread-styles.html
  3. Q:What pre-finished color on the retro red oak treads is closest to a clear poly finish?
A:"Prefinished Red Oak Natural" is a clear aluminum oxide finish.
  4. Q:Does this tread come in a thickness less than 3/4"? Also if I install the tread on the first step the distance from the floor to the top of the first tread would be 8 3/4'" with the rest being 8" is that normal?
A:3/4" is the thinnest tread we make. The 3/4" Stair Tread on the first step will not be an issue, since all the treads are being increased by the same amount. You will not be able to feel or see a difference. The very top step will be a little lower, unless you install the Landing Tread. The landing tread is 3/4" thick also, and has a groove in the back for carpet or hardwood to be set in the groove. So all of the steps will be 8 3/4" if you are putting a retro tread on each step.
  5. Q:Can you send me a sample of this to see if I need this color or the butter oak treads? My address is: **** La Grange, GA 30240 Thanks!
A:Here's a link to the red oak sample pack on our website, it should be very helpful. You can purchase the sample pack online or give us a call and we'll be glad to place this order for you. http://woodstairco.com/moulding-and-accessories/wood-samples/red-oak-stain-colors-sample-pack.html
  6. Q:I have a100 year old home with 9" widths. Should I order standard sizes and cut to fit , or order special to fit ?
A:Yes, you should order standard size treads and cut to fit onsite.
  7. Q:What does closed or box end mean on a stair tread?
A:Closed (box) end means both sides of the tread are cut square with no decorative return nosing — it fits wall to wall with both ends hidden. The correct style when neither end of your staircase is open to the room. Most widely available in all species, sizes, and finishes
  8. Q:Why is Red Oak the most popular species for stair treads?
A:Red Oak accounts for over 50% of hardwood floors in US homes built before 2015, making it the natural match for most staircase upgrades. Janka hardness 1290 — handles residential traffic for decades. Open grain accepts stain evenly for consistent color matching to existing floors.
  9. Q:What is a retro stair tread and how does it differ from a traditional tread?
A:A retro (retrofit) stair tread is 3/4" thick and installs directly OVER your existing tread — no removal required. The flat bottom sits flush over the current step. Traditional treads are 1" thick and used in new construction or full replacements where existing treads are removed. If your staircase structure is sound, retro treads are faster, less invasive, and DIY-friendly.
  10. Q:What is the step-by-step process for installing a retro stair tread?
A:Step 1: Measure existing tread width and trim retro tread to fit (1/16" gap each end). Step 2: Clean existing tread surface — remove staples, wax, debris. Step 3: Apply Loctite PL Premium adhesive in S-curves across entire back of tread. Step 4: Press firmly onto existing tread and nail with brad nailer at 6" intervals along front nosing and back edge. Step 5: Wipe excess adhesive. Allow 24 hours before walking on. Time per tread: 30–45 minutes.
  11. Q:Is 36 inches a standard stair tread width?
A:36" is the standard minimum width for townhomes, condos, basement staircases, and older homes. Most US residential building codes require a minimum 36" clear stair width. If measuring a tight staircase — townhouse, older colonial, or basement — 36" treads will typically fit. Always measure wall to wall before ordering.
  12. Q:What does Golden Oak stain look like?
A:Golden Oak is a light, warm honey stain — more yellow-gold than orange. Lighter than Gunstock and Butterscotch. Ideal for rooms where you want brightness and warmth. A classic match for Red Oak floors finished in the 1990s–early 2000s. Also popular for beach house, cottage, and Scandinavian-influenced interiors.
  13. Q:Is Golden Oak the same colour in 36 in and 48 in lengths?
A:Yes- the Golden Oak prefinished colour is consistent across all tread lengths. The stain is applied in the same factory run to ensure colour uniformity. Natural grain variation in Red Oak may create slight visual differences, but the stain tone is the same.
  14. Q:What is the total cost to redo a narrow 36-inch staircase with retro treads?
    A:For a 13-step narrow staircase: 13 × $57.43 treads = $746. Add 13 × $14.77 white risers = $192. Add cove moulding (13 pieces × $3.60 = $47). Add 3 tubes of Loctite PL ($27). Estimated total: approximately $1,012 in materials- a fraction of full replacement cost ($3,000–$8,000+)
  15. Q:Can the 36-inch Golden Oak tread be used on carpet stairs?
A:Yes- but all carpet, tack strips, and staples must be removed before installation. The existing tread surface must be clean, flat, and dry. Sand or grind any adhesive residue flat before applying the retro tread
  16. Q:What is the lead time for 36-inch Golden Oak retro treads?
A:Standard sizes- including 36 in Golden Oak- are in stock at WoodStairCo and typically ship within the standard lead time shown on the product page. No special order wait required.
