Product Questions and Answers
  1. Q:I am concerned about the top step, which I assume is what is referred to as the landing. I plan on installing wood laminate flooring in the area at the top of the stairs. How do you make the transition from the top step/landing to the laminate flooring? Please clarify/confirm the following: - Do I need to buy 3/4" laminate? - Do I need to specify the type/maker so that you can you provide a joint that will lock to the flooring? - Do you sell threshold pieces that can be used to transition from the landing to the flooring? - Does the flooring have to run parallel to the landing or can it run perpendicular? Thank you.
A:That's a great question and a very common one as well. If you are installing laminate on the upper level of your home, we recommend using the flooring manufacturer's "stairnose" to use along the edge where your flooring meets the staircase. Our landing treads are designed to be used with standard 3/4" solid wood flooring. Laminate flooring typically requires a special overlap profile to secure the flooring and our standard 3/4" landing tread is not recommended. In short - if you are installing laminate, we recommend ordering a single stairnose or landing tread from your flooring supplier instead of this landing tread. As far as installing the flooring, you may find it easiest to run the flooring parallel to the stairnose because of the tongue configuration. Officially, flooring should be run parallel to the front of the house or perpendicular to the flooring joists. Unfortunately, we only have the landing tread or 3/4" nosing at this point in time - not the thresholds for doorways. Again, we recommend you purchase those transition pieces from the flooring supplier who should keep them in stock.
