White stair risers are the most popular riser finish in US homes, pairing with any hardwood tread species and stain color.
WoodStairCo manufactures two profiles- a 1/4" retro riser with a white laminate coating that installs over existing risers without demolition, and a 3/4" traditional riser that is pre-primed and ready for one coat of white paint.
Shop both profiles below and order the same length as your stair treads.
What are White Stair Risers?
White stair risers are the vertical boards installed between each stair tread. WoodStairCo offers two profiles- a 1/4" retro overlay with a white laminate coating (no painting required), and a 3/4" traditional riser, pre-primed for one coat of white paint. Both install alongside any hardwood stair tread. Made in the USA.
WoodStairCo was among the first manufacturers to offer a prefinished stair tread. It remains a dedicated stair manufacturer, not a flooring reseller. Every stair product ships ready to install-
Retro white risers- plywood core, white laminate coating, no painting required
Traditional white risers- pre-primed factory face, ready for one coat of white paint
Custom stain matching for job-lot tread orders

FAQ
1- What are white stair risers?
White stair risers are the vertical boards installed between each stair tread. They close the space beneath each step, contribute to staircase safety, and create the high-contrast wood-and-white look that is the most popular staircase aesthetic in the US.
2- What is the difference between retro and traditional white stair risers?
Retro risers are 1/4" thin overlays that install over existing risers without demolition and are finished with a white laminate coating. Traditional risers are 3/4" thick, pre-primed, and install directly on the stringer for new construction or full riser replacement.
3- Do white retro stair risers need to be painted?
No. WoodStairCo's retro white risers ship with a white laminate coating that is the finished surface. No painting is required. If you choose to paint them, standard latex paint will not adhere without a bonding primer applied first.
4- Should I use white risers or matching wood risers?
White risers are the better choice when you want high contrast, have white trim throughout the home, or are working with a budget. Matching wood risers are preferred when the design calls for a uniform species look, most common in Northeast installations.
5- How many white stair risers do I need for my staircase?
Order one more riser than the number of treads on your staircase. A 12-step staircase needs 13 risers. Order risers in the same length as your treads, in standard lengths from 36" to 94".
6- Can I use traditional 3/4" white risers with retro stair treads?
Yes, when the existing riser is fully removed. Install the 3/4" traditional riser directly on the stringer, then install the retro tread overlay on top. The retro tread nosing will cleanly cover the top edge of the riser.
7- What adhesive should I use to install white retro stair risers?
Use Loctite PL Premium construction adhesive, available in our stair installation tools section. Apply in S-curves across the full back face, press over the existing riser, and secure with a brad nailer at 6-inch intervals.
8- What wood stair treads look best with white risers?
Dark and medium species produce the most contrast. Dark-stained Red Oak, White Oak, or Walnut treads against white risers is the dominant look in modern American homes. Oak with white risers in any stain is the most widely installed combination.
