If you search the internet for "stair treads" you are likely to be engulfed with hundreds of companies that offer you the opportunity to buy unfinished stair treads.

Most of these companies buy their stair treads from a handful of manufacturers and resell them over the internet or brick and mortar stores. These same companies often sell flooring as their primary product and are either not interested or not educated in stairs. As a small manufacturer, we offer you top-notch service and custom solutions that other retailers can not offer.

We are a pioneer of the prefinished stair tread and were one of the first companies in the world to offer a stair tread prefinished.

We are also one of the few (if not the only) manufacturer to offer stair treads custom stained to your flooring on job-lot quantities. Every component that goes into our finished product is first quality. We only use select grade raw treads and, on our prefinished products, industrial wood finishes that require specialized machinery to apply. Other companies use commercially available finishes that simply won’t hold up to heavy traffic over time.

Our roots date back to the early 2000's when we produced prefinished moulding for flooring distributors in Georgia. Back then, our primary products were flooring transitions specifically designed to match a flooring product from particular flooring manufacturers. During this period, we learned to offer better color matching and superior products and services than our competition and quickly expanded to supply every major flooring dealer in the north Georgia market. Shortly thereafter, we expanded into the national market with great success. It was during this time that we developed the prefinished stair tread as a favor for Orvis Cook, the owner of Cook's Wholesale Flooring. Mr. Cook was remodeling his home and needed to match his stairs to the flooring he was installing. At the time, we had never contemplated the idea of a prefinished stair tread, but it made perfect sense! Shortly after the delivery of his stair treads, we began to formulate a new program based on the prefinished stair tread and took it to all of our customers. The new program spread like wildfire and soon, we were processing twice the volume of stair tread orders as moulding.

As a small manufacturer, we lacked the resources for large scale national advertising and needed a way to bring the prefinished stair tread to the entire world.

Enter the Internet, a global medium with reasonable advertising costs
We created our original online store Stair-Treads.com in early 2006 as a test to see if it was possible to sell stair treads online with very low expectations. Much to our surprise, it was an almost immediate success as our first online order came in. The direct to consumer marketing was a success and continued to grow. Unfortunately, no one on our staff had any experience in web design and we had a steep learning curve to catch up with the rest of the 21st century. Eventually (and with the help of numerous tech support calls), we learned to successfully keep an updated website and added numerous products. Even to this day, we still receive phone calls and e-mails with people commenting that they didn't know prefinished stair treads even existed

In early 2008, we made the transition away from moulding to only supply stair treads. It was a difficult transition but a weak housing market (decreased demand) increased our moulding costs to a point where it was no longer sustainable. Even through the tumultuous new construction market of 2008, the remodel market remained strong and vibrant and we were fortunate to have so many great web customers. We relocated operations to South Carolina by partnering with a raw tread manufacturer for efficiency, and the prefinished tread business grew by leaps and bounds.

As the new construction market recovered in the 2010’s, our prefinished products were installed in thousands of homes, and hundreds of subdivisions throughout the Coastal Carolinas and North Georgia. As demand for our prefinished treads grew in both the retail segment and the wholesale distribution segment, our segmented distribution model created operational inefficiencies and numerous challenges.

The decision was made in July of 2025 to separate the retail operations from the wholesale builder distribution operations. Using our now 20+ years of experience and extensive contacts in the wood business, Wood Stair Co was born under the JAM Consulting umbrella.

Through strong partnerships, we gained the ability to source the best stair parts, at the best prices, and deliver them efficiently to homeowners, contractors, and small builders.

With relocation to a brand new facility in North Georgia in 2025, new finishing machinery will be added and inventory will be doubled to further streamline our prefinished offerings and allow us to rapidly ship both finished and unfinished products across the country with short lead-times and superior quality.

By sourcing raw product from multiple vendors, we can deliver the best value and the best quality without the bottlenecks experienced by commodity manufacturers daily production capacity.
